So, apparently Nick Denton can’t afford to the $50m needed to appeal the Hogan decision. So instead he decides to offer his 30% stock in Gawker, valuing it at $81m. Well, the court found out his stake isn’t even worth half of what he claimed it did.

As punishment, the judge is now allowing Hogan to seize assets from Gawker Media.

Regardless of where you sit on this case** this is bad for all of us...Denton can’t keep his ego and arrogance in check for even a few freaking minutes.

It’s bizarre, since they have an offer on the table from ZD, which should provide some solid insight into how much the company is worth, as well as the fact the if they can’t pay, it really highlights how ridiculous the ruling is.

Gawker and Jalopnik have immense name value. Even if the assets are seized Hogan will probably be smart enough just to have leadership restructured and keep it going largely unchanged. He will have his cake and eat it too.

They blackmailed a Conde Nast exec. Basically the guy got himself an escort and didn’t pay. The escort felt offended and demanded Gawker run a story to get back at the Conde Nast guy for not paying.

Or in essence, a male prostitute asked Gawker to blackmail the Conde Nast guy to get him to pay, effectively outing him to the world at the same time.

The escort wanted to give the Conde Nast guy an ultimatum, pay him, or his family will know about his sexuality. Well...Gawker published the crap anyways, so it’s not like he even got to decide in the ultimatum.

They posted unedited text messages and personal information on the guy galore. There is nothing newsworthy about a guy not paying an escort, but Gawker decided they wanted to ruin the guy’s life over it.

Commenters on the piece were universally against it being posted. I mean, they had literally everything posted about the guy but the address of his house. Gawker edited the post the next day, but at that point, the damage was already done.

Denton lied about the value the offer from zd us the smoking gun proving Denton knew that his valuation was false.

Actually, there’s good news there! :) Under recent Supreme Court decisions, the KKK (and the Westboro Baptist Church) isn’t protected under the First anymore. Hate Speech (including from the press) isn’t protected under Freedom of the Press or any part of the First.

Since Gawker made it clear that the only intent in the article was to blackmail the Conde guy into paying his escort, or have his life ruined, the Conde guy could have (and probably still can) sue Gawker and walk the case.

I still wish the Conde Nast guy would have too, because publications should not be used to blackmail/extort people, public or not. Unlike Hogan, the Conde Nast guy actually has a solid case and violation of the 1st.
